What is Shukubo?

What is Shukubo?

The place at a temple which offers lodging is called a shukubo. The word shukubo originally comes from the rooms where monks sleep, but now it is open to worshippers and to the general public. Kakurinbo is one of the shukubo located on Mt. Minobu. They provide accommodation to everyone coming to worship here as a sub-temple of Minobusan Kuonji Temple, the head temple of the Nichiren sect.

The rooms are decorated in Wafu (Japanese) style. Feel the texture of tatami beneath your feet, and enjoy the soft light coming through shoji (paper) window. The fusuma (sliding) doors add to the authentic atmosphere of the rooms. All the rooms enable you to experience the atmosphere of a shukubo. In addition, the rooms on the north side give a great view of a wonderful Japanese garden created by Muso Kokushi, a famous historic gardener.

Home made cuisine

One of the typical ways to enjoy a stay at a shukubo is to have shojin ryori (vegetarian cuisine) made from vegetables, beans and wheat. Enjoy yuba dishes (original cherry tree steamed yuba and tomato hot pot of yuba and soy milk) which will surely satisfy you.

The bathroom, with its large window, is located right next to the Japanese garden created by Muso Kokushi, so you can get a full view of the garden as you immerse yourself into the bathtub. Since Yamanashi is renowned for its production of grapes, the temple adds wine salts to the bath, which helps you totally relax. For the convenience of elderly and handicapped guests, the toilets are absolutely barrier-free.
