One of the Finest Traditional Performance Arts in Japan

Noh was first formalized by a man named Zeami and his father Kanami, who also were the founder of Kanze school, by adding theatrical element to a mimic and by refining it to a performance arts under the patronage of the Shogun Yoshimitsu Ashikaga of the Muromachi period. The beauty of noh expressed by Zeami as “Hana” (a flower) as a metaphor, is an element of the art that moves the audience by its well-trained performance, and that is the beauty and the nature of Japanese arts.

Let's go find the "Hana"

Feel and experience noh by taking a workshop of Yamanashi born Kanze school noh player Jiro Sakuma.
Biography: Born in 1972. After graduating from high school, he became a pupil of Yoshiyuki Kanze, the head of the 4th troop of “Yaraikanze” family and the holder of Important Intangible Cultural Property. He achieved his six and a half year of training at the age of 24. In 1998, he was certified as a Kanze noh player by the originator of Kanze school, and next year gave a lecture “Follow the path to ‘Hana’” for beginners. He is devoted to popularize Noh to public, especially to the people of his hometown Yamanashi. In 2005, he held the first event of “takigi noh” (noh by torchlight), successful in inviting about 1,000 audience and since then holds the event every year.
