The building of the Fujimura Memorial Hall in Kofu City was built in 1875 as the Mutsuzawa School building in Mutsuzawa Village, Koma County (now Kamezawa, Kai City).
During this period, many government buildings, schools and merchant houses were built in this architectural style.
This architectural style is said to have been promoted by Yamanashi Prefectural Ordinance Fujimura Shiro, and is known as Fujimura-style architecture in the prefecture.
In 1967, it was designated a National Important Cultural Property, and since 1969 it has long been an exhibition centre for local folklore, history, education and archaeological materials. In September 1990, the exhibition was changed to an educational museum, and on 1 October 2010 it was relocated to the north exit of Kofu Station and newly opened as an exchange guidance facility.
Deep bowl-shaped earthenware with human mask decoration (excavated from the Goro site), a component of the Japanese Heritage Site ‘The Jomon World of the Starry Central Highlands’, is also on display.
