Kai Zenkoji Temple is a temple of the Jodo sect in Kofu City. It dates back to 1558, when its founder, Takeda Shingen, feared that the Shinano Zenkoji Temple would be destroyed by fire during the Battle of Kawanakajima, and moved the principal image of Zenkoji Nyorai to the temple.
The Kondo (main hall) and the gate are designated as National Important Cultural Properties. The Kondo, with its douki-zukuri (a structure in which the main building and the kamaya (a building dedicated to cooking) are each independent, and the roof is in the shape of a T (douki), is one of the largest and most imposing wooden buildings in eastern Japan.
Two giant dragons are painted on the ceiling of the Kondo, and if you clap your hands under them, the sound resonates and sounds like the cry of a dragon. The Okaidan Meguri, which takes the form of the Chinese character for 'heart', is located below the main hall, where visitors can experience the practice of walking around a small room in total darkness beneath the Gohonzon and touching a key to connect with the Gohonzon.
During the Ox and Hitsuji years, the door of the kitchen in which the principal image is enshrined is opened and the index finger of the right hand of the principal image is connected to the Ekobashira pillar erected in front of the main hall by a string called the 'rope of goodness'. Touching this pillar is said to bring the same blessings as directly touching the principal image.
