In the Kamakura period (1185-1333), the temple was a branch of Kenchoji Temple, but it was in decline until Mumuso Kokushi restored it and renamed it 'Jiun' (meaning 'extremely blessed by Buddha').
Until the banknote renewal scheduled for 2024, the temple has a statue of Higuchi Ichiyo, who is probably familiar on the current 5,000 yen note. The inscription was written by Rohan Koda, and on the reverse side are the names of great writers of the Meiji era.
The Ito-zakura is a variety of the Edohigan cherry tree and is said to be over 300 years old. The dark pink Ito-zakura, which is just before full bloom, is gorgeous and magnificent, with a height of 14 m.
