It is a 20-30 minute walk up the side of Kawaguchi Sengen Shrine.
The reason it is called 'Mother' is because it enshrines 'Takuhatachihime-no-mikoto', the mother-in-law of Kawaguchi Sengen Shrine's deity 'Kibana Kaiyahime' (the deity of Mt Fuji).
According to legend, since the Heian period (794-1185), the temple has been revered as a place to purify oneself before climbing Mt Fuji, and was also regarded as a place of ascetic practices.
In mid-winter, around February, if the conditions are right, the view of the icefall is so breathtaking that it seems as if time has stood still, and the silence accentuates the workings of nature.

Do not walk along the forest road, but continue along the river.
