This facility mainly exhibits artifacts such as clay figurines, earthenware and stone tools from the Shakado Ruins, which are representative of the Jomon period in the Chubu region, especially in Fuefuki-shi and Koshu-shi.
The 5,599 artifacts excavated from the Shakado site (heavy cultural heritage) are part of the Japan Heritage Site [The Jomon World of the Starry Central Highlands], and the number of clay figurines alone is 1,116, making it one of the largest numbers excavated from a single site in Japan.
The Chubu Highlands, centred on the Yatsugatake Mountains, are home to a unique Jomon-era obsidian mine, and Japan's oldest brand of obsidian is said to have been brought to various parts of Japan as a material for top-quality arrowheads.
