In 1720, during the reign of the 8th Shogun Yoshimune, the Shogunate's official medicine collector, Niwa Masahaku, identified the medicinal plant liquorice in the Takano family compound, and was offered the task of cultivating and managing it for the Shogunate's use. The former Takano family residence, a private house and compound dating from the late Edo period, which continued until its demise, is used as a historical park.
The main feature of the house is its thatched roof (now with copper shingles) and gabled structure with a two-tiered pitched roof in the middle.
Licorice is an important herbal medicine used extensively as a sweetener and seasoning, as well as for medicinal purposes, and is used in Chinese herbal medicines such as Kuzune-to and Koseongryu-to.ADDRESS 1651-15 Oiso, Shioyama, Koshu City, Yamanashi Prefecture, Japan 404-0042 PHONE 0553-33-5910 E-MAIL info@city.koshu.yamanashi.jp ACCESS By train
