The company name Soryu is derived from the name of a Chinese legendary deity who protects the east among the guardian deities of the north, south, east and west.
Founded in 1899, Soryu is one of the most traditional wineries in the wine kingdom of Katsunuma, due to the kinship between the pioneers of Japanese winemaking, Masanobu Takano and Ryuken Tsuchiya, and the founding families of Soryu.
At the time of its foundation, Soryu was a small-scale winemaking company run by a community of local farmers who brought their grapes to the winery and brewed, sold and bought only what they needed. In 1943, when the recognition of wine gradually spread, Shigetomi Suzuki, the current chairman, bought all the shares owned by the farmers and started full-scale winery management under a private licence, and Soryu wine was launched in the market.
Soryu's philosophy of ‘doing what is in the other person's interest rather than one's own’ has been maintained since the company's founding, and the company has always been committed to customer satisfaction rather than pursuing profit.
Since 1996, Soryu has been offering additive-free wines with the original taste and aroma of grapes.
