The smallest of the Fuji Five Lakes, it was formed when the Aokigahara lava flow from the eruption of Mt Fuji in 864AD split the Se lakes and formed Lake Nishiko and Lake Shojin.
The maximum depth of the lake is 15.2 metres, making it the third deepest (along with Lake Kawaguchi), and at 0.5 square kilometres it has the smallest lake area of the Five Lakes. It has the characteristic of being a nutrient lake, rich in plankton and other organisms.
Originally a small swamp, the lake was artificially expanded with the construction of dykes in 1935 and is now an artificial lake with a water storage capacity of 706,000 m3.
It is also a famous spot for photographing Mt Fuji, where you can enjoy a different view of the 'child-hugging Fuji' and 'upside-down Fuji'.
